How To Be More Productive (When You Don’t Feel Like It)
Productivity is an essential element of success in both our personal and professional lives. However, there are times when we may not feel motivated or energised enough to tackle our growing to-do lists. It can be challenging to stay productive and achieve our goals. So how do we keep on track when our motivation is waning? Here are eight practical tips and strategies to help you be more productive, even when you don’t feel like it.

1. Break tasks into manageable chunks
When you have a long to-do list, it can feel overwhelming and lead to feelings of procrastination. Instead, try breaking down tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. Focus on completing one task at a time, and then move onto the next. This can help you feel a sense of accomplishment and momentum, which can fuel your productivity.
2. Create a conducive work environment
Our environment can significantly impact our productivity levels. If you’re working from home, make sure you have a designated workspace. This space should be quiet, organised and free from distractions. Removing clutter can also help to eliminate distractions and improve your focus. Additionally, ensure that you have adequate lighting and a comfortable chair to avoid physical discomfort (or an excuse to be distracted). Creating an environment that supports your work can go a long way in boosting your productivity.
3. Set achievable goals
Setting goals can be a great motivator for productivity but it’s essential to ensure that they are achievable. If your goals are too ambitious, you may feel overwhelmed and discouraged. Instead, set realistic goals that you can accomplish within a reasonable timeframe. Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may be, and use them to fuel your motivation. It can also help to use a goal setting planner, such as the one I’ve developed, to help map out your goals. For more tips on setting effective goals, see my previous post.
4. Take breaks
Taking regular breaks throughout the day can help you recharge and stay focused. Short breaks can increase productivity, reduce stress, and prevent burnout. Use your break time to do something you enjoy, such as taking a walk, listening to music, or meditating. When you return to work, you’ll feel refreshed and ready to tackle your tasks.
5. Prioritise your tasks
Not all tasks are created equal. It’s crucial to prioritise your tasks based on their level of importance and urgency. Tackle the most critical tasks first and then move onto less pressing ones. This can help you stay focused and ensure that you accomplish what matters most.
6. Use the Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that involves breaking work into intervals, typically 25 minutes, separated by short breaks. This technique can help you stay focused and motivated while also preventing burnout. Try setting a timer for 25 minutes and working on a task until the timer goes off. Then, take a short break before starting another 25-minute interval.
7. Eliminate distractions
Distractions can derail our productivity and prevent us from accomplishing our tasks. Identify your most significant distractions, such as social media or email notifications, and eliminate them. Use apps and tools to block distracting websites or turn off notifications during work hours. This can help you stay focused and minimise interruptions, especially once you’ve got the ball rolling!
8. Stay accountable
Accountability can be a powerful motivator for productivity. Sharing your goals with a friend or colleague and checking in with them regularly can help you stay on track. Using a productivity app or journal to track your progress and hold yourself accountable can also be an effective strategy. Knowing that someone else is aware of your goals can help you stay on track.
